An HIV test is most reliable after the window period. For the common 4th generation blood test, the RIVM uses a window of up to 90 days to rule out an infection with certainty. A test often gives a result before that, but ruling it out fully is only possible after that period.
Below you'll read how the window period works, which types of HIV test exist, and where you can get tested.
One thing first: uncertainty after a risk moment weighs heavily. Knowing where you stand brings peace of mind.
When should you do an HIV test?
Usually after a risk moment, such as unprotected contact. How long you wait determines how reliable the result is. Testing too early can miss an infection, because your body hasn't yet produced detectable traces.
Unsure after a recent risk? Contact your GP or the GGD. In some cases there's still a medical route shortly after exposure.
How does an HIV test work? Which types are there?
There are a few variants, each with its own window. The most used is the 4th generation blood test, which detects both antibodies and a virus particle (p24 antigen). There are also RNA tests and self-tests.
| Test type | What it measures | Indicative window |
|---|---|---|
| 4th generation (blood) | Antibodies + p24 antigen | Reliable after about 4 to 6 weeks, certain after 90 days (RIVM) |
| RNA test | Viral material | Can detect an infection earlier, used in a targeted way |
| Self-test (finger prick) | Antibodies | Longer window, result to confirm with a lab test |
At VitalCheck an HIV test runs via HIV screening in the blood. Want to combine more STIs? Build your own test via custom blood test.
How many days until an HIV test is reliable?
For the 4th generation blood test a result is often indicative after 4 to 6 weeks, and after 90 days you can rule out an infection with certainty (RIVM). Chlamydia and gonorrhoea usually have a shorter window, there's more on that in the STI test guide.
To be sure: with an early negative result, wait until after the window for a repeat test, or check with your GP.
Where can you take an HIV test?
Via the GGD, your GP or a private test without a referral. The GGD sometimes tests for free for risk groups. A private test you arrange yourself, discreetly online, separate from your deductible.
Want to keep it anonymous or discreet? Read our anonymous STI test. For another common bacterial STI there's the gonorrhoea test.
What does a positive or negative result mean?
A negative result after the window means no HIV was detected. A positive result means there are indications of HIV and that further testing is needed. HIV is very treatable these days, but that starts with a doctor.
With a positive result, always contact your GP or the GGD for confirmation and guidance.
What's the difference between an HIV test and a broader STI test?
An HIV test looks specifically at HIV. A broader STI test combines several STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis, in one go. Which suits you depends on your situation and your risk.
If you're only worried about HIV, a single test is often enough. Want a broader view? You can combine STIs via custom blood test. In the STI test guide you'll see the window periods of all STIs side by side.
Shortly after a risk moment there's sometimes a medical route to prevent infection. That's time-sensitive, so with a recent high risk, contact your GP or the GGD quickly.
Can you combine an HIV test with other STIs?
Yes. Many people have HIV tested together with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. That gives you a broader view in one go. You choose what to test yourself via custom blood test.
Frequently asked questions about the HIV test
How long after a risk is an HIV test reliable?
For the 4th generation test often indicative after 4 to 6 weeks, and certain after 90 days (RIVM). When in doubt, your GP or the GGD can help.
Do you need a referral for an HIV test?
No. You can request a private HIV test yourself, without a referral from your GP.
Is an HIV self-test reliable?
A self-test can give an indication, but often has a longer window. A positive or uncertain result you confirm with a lab test via your GP or the GGD.
Every blood test result at VitalCheck includes a professional assessment from a BIG-registered doctor. For treatment decisions, always discuss your results with your GP.
