How long blood test results take depends mostly on which tests are on the request. Routine tests such as a blood count, kidney and liver values are ready in many laboratories within a few hours to one working day. Vitamins, hormones and specialised tests more often take 2 to 5 working days, and cultures take longer still.
There is one thing almost nobody explains that does account for the wait. The analyser is often finished while you still see nothing.
Between "the lab has a number" and "you may see that number" sits a separate step. That step is usually the real delay.
How long does it take per type of test?
Broadly: the more routine the test, the faster. Tests that run in large daily batches come out quickest. Tests that are saved up until there are enough samples, or that go to a specialised laboratory, take longer.
The table below gives common turnaround times. They vary per laboratory, so read them as guidance, not a promise.

With a panel, the slowest test decides when everything is complete. One five-day test among nine one-day tests means you wait five days for the set.
That is the most common reason people think something has gone wrong.
Say you order a panel with 4 tests, of which 3 are ready the next morning. The fourth is vitamin D, and that only runs 2 times a week. So you wait 3 days for the set, while three quarters of it was already done.
I see that question come up regularly. Nothing went wrong. One slow test was in the mix.
Why does it take longer than the analyser needs?
Because a result is only released after checking and authorisation. A laboratory verifies whether the measurement is technically sound, whether the sample was usable, and whether unusual values deserve a repeat. Only once an authorised person releases the result does it become visible to you or your doctor.
That step usually costs hours, sometimes a day. It exists not to make you wait, but to stop a measurement error leaving the building as your result.
Logistics count too. If you are drawn at a collection point, the tubes travel to the laboratory first. Draw late in the afternoon and analysis often starts the next morning.
So an early slot sometimes saves a full day.
How long do results take when your GP requested them?
Often several days, because two waits stack up: the laboratory and the practice. The lab delivers the result to the GP, and after that it depends on when the GP reviews results and calls or books you in.

Where do you find your blood test results?
That depends on who requested them. Via your GP, the result arrives there and you discuss it with the practice, often visible in the patient portal too. If you requested it yourself, the result appears in your own account once the laboratory has released it.
Seeing nothing yet usually means the test has not been released. That is different from lost.
Can a result take longer than expected?
Yes, and there are ordinary explanations. A sample can be clotted or underfilled, so the test has to be repeated. An unusual value is sometimes remeasured as a check. And a test going to a specialised laboratory travels on a shipping schedule.
A repeat measurement is not bad news. It is quality control doing its job.
If it takes much longer than announced, simply ask where the sample stands.
Does fasting affect turnaround?
No, it has no effect on speed. It does affect whether the result is usable for certain tests. For a routine lipid profile, a European consensus statement concluded that fasting is usually not required (Nordestgaard et al., European Heart Journal, 2016, PMID 27122601).
