Lamotrigine Blood Level: What Your Test Results Mean

The lamotrigine test monitors blood levels of this anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer, as prescribed by your doctor. As part of comprehensive health monitoring, this test helps ensure your medication levels remain within the therapeutic range.

When is this value abnormal?

Decision limits per result, in mg/l
Result Value (mg/l)
Subtherapeutic < 2,5

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): what this test measures

This test measures the blood concentration of the medication lamotrigine, as prescribed by your doctor. Monitoring helps your healthcare provider determine whether your current dose is producing levels within the desired therapeutic range.

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): why this value matters

Maintaining lamotrigine within the therapeutic range is important for effective seizure control or mood stabilization. Levels that are too low may not provide adequate benefit, while levels that are too high may be associated with an increased risk of side effects.

Referral
No GP referral needed. After the order we arrange the referral through ZorgDomein, within one business day; orders after 17:00 or at the weekend start on the next business day. ZorgDomein emails a barcode, and that barcode is what the draw site needs.
The draw

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): how to prepare

  1. Draw just before your next dose

    Required

A drug level is measured just before your next dose. If you take it at a fixed time each day, have the blood drawn just before then. For lithium, at least 12 hours after the last dose.

  • Water is always fine. Drink as usual beforehand, it makes the draw easier.
  • Take your usual medication, unless your own doctor told you otherwise.

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): when is testing worthwhile?

Testing is typically recommended when starting or adjusting lamotrigine therapy, when adding or removing interacting medications, or if your doctor suspects subtherapeutic or toxic levels. Regular monitoring as advised by your healthcare provider is essential.

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): symptoms of a high or low value

Low Levels

Low lamotrigine levels may indicate subtherapeutic dosing, which can be associated with breakthrough seizures or inadequate mood stabilization. Consult your healthcare professional if you experience a return of symptoms.

High Levels

High lamotrigine levels may indicate a risk of toxicity, which can be associated with skin rash, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, and coordination difficulties. Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you experience these symptoms.

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): lifestyle and this value

Take lamotrigine exactly as prescribed by your doctor and do not adjust your dose without medical guidance. Attend all scheduled blood monitoring appointments and inform your doctor of any new medications or supplements you are taking.

Lamotrigine (Lamictal): frequently asked questions

How often should I have my lamotrigine levels checked?

Your doctor will determine the testing frequency based on your individual needs. Testing is often recommended after dose changes, when new medications are added, or at regular intervals during stable therapy.

Can other medications affect my lamotrigine levels?

Yes, several medications can influence lamotrigine levels, including certain oral contraceptives and other anticonvulsants. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you take.

Should I take my medication before the blood test?

Your doctor will advise you on timing. Trough levels are often measured just before your next dose. Follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare professional.
