A liver values blood test measures enzymes released by your liver when damage or overload occurs. The three key enzymes are ALAT, ASAT and Gamma-GT.

The three liver enzymes

ALAT - most liver-specific. Normal: men below 45, women below 35 U/L. Elevated in fatty liver, hepatitis, medication damage.

ASAT - found in liver, heart and muscles. ASAT/ALAT ratio above 2:1 may suggest alcohol-related damage.

Gamma-GT - particularly sensitive to alcohol and bile duct problems. Often the first enzyme to rise with excessive drinking.

What patterns tell you

ALAT dominant: direct liver cell damage. ASAT dominant: alcohol damage or muscle issues. Gamma-GT dominant: bile duct problems or alcohol. All three elevated: more serious liver disease.

When to test

Regular alcohol consumption, medications that burden the liver, overweight, unexplained fatigue or preventive health screening.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly do liver values respond to lifestyle changes?

Relatively fast. After stopping alcohol: 2-4 weeks. With weight loss: 4-8 weeks.
