Included Markers
1 markersThis liver function test measures a group of enzymes and proteins that together reflect how your liver is performing its processing and filtering tasks. The liver plays a central role in metabolism, detoxification, and protein production.
Why this test?
The liver performs hundreds of functions, including processing nutrients, filtering waste products, and producing proteins needed for blood clotting and other processes. Liver function can be affected by diet, alcohol intake, medications, and other factors. Changes in liver enzymes may develop gradually and often do not produce noticeable symptoms until they are more advanced. This test measures the markers most commonly used to assess liver function.
Who is this test for?
This test may be relevant for:
- People who want to check their liver health as part of a general wellness check
- Those who consume alcohol and want to monitor its potential effect on the liver
- Anyone taking medications that may affect liver function
- People with a family history of liver conditions
- Those who have previously had elevated liver values and want to follow up
What is tested?
This panel includes a Liver Function Test (LFT), which typically measures:
- ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase): an enzyme found mainly in the liver; elevated levels may suggest liver cell activity
- AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase): an enzyme found in the liver and other tissues
- ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase): an enzyme associated with the bile ducts and bones
- GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase): an enzyme that may be elevated in response to alcohol or certain medications
- Bilirubin: a waste product from red blood cell breakdown, processed by the liver
- Albumin: a protein produced by the liver, reflecting its synthetic capacity
- Total Protein: a combined measure of proteins in the blood
What can this test tell you?
Elevated ALT or AST may suggest increased liver cell activity, which can occur for many reasons including alcohol use, fatty liver changes, or medication effects. Elevated GGT can be associated with alcohol consumption or bile duct involvement. Low albumin may indicate reduced liver production capacity. Elevated bilirubin can suggest changes in how the liver processes waste.
These markers provide a snapshot and are most meaningful when interpreted together. A healthcare provider can help determine whether any findings warrant further evaluation.
How is the sample collected?
This test uses a blood sample collected at a certified sample point (afnamepunt). With over 750 partner locations across the Netherlands, you can choose a location that suits you. A trained phlebotomist performs the blood draw, and results are typically available within a few working days.
When is this test useful?
This test may be useful when:
- You want to check your liver health without specific symptoms
- You are taking medications that may affect the liver
- You want to see how dietary or lifestyle habits may be reflected in your liver values
- You have had abnormal liver markers in the past and want to check current levels
What do the results mean?
Each marker is shown with your measured value and the reference range. Mildly elevated enzymes can occur temporarily due to factors like strenuous exercise, medications, or alcohol. Persistently elevated values or a combination of abnormal markers may suggest a need for further investigation.
Your report includes explanations for each marker. A healthcare provider can help interpret the results in the context of your lifestyle, medical history, and any medications you take.
Preparation
Fasting is not strictly required but may improve the consistency of some results. If you choose to fast, 8 to 12 hours is recommended. Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before the test, as recent alcohol intake can temporarily elevate liver enzymes and affect the accuracy of the results.
What happens after the results?
Your results are typically available within a few working days. The report includes your values with reference ranges and plain-language explanations. If any value falls outside the expected range, this is highlighted. We recommend discussing the results with a healthcare provider for personalised interpretation and guidance on any follow-up.

What We Test
This health panel includes 1 biomarkers to give you a comprehensive picture of your health.
A liver function test is a comprehensive blood panel that combines multiple markers to assess overall liver health and function. It typically includes enzymes such as ALT, AST, and GGT, along with bilirubin, albumin, and other indicators to provide a complete picture of how well the liver is performing.

LiverA liver function test is a comprehensive blood panel that combines multiple markers to assess overall liver health and function. The liver performs over 500 vital functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and bile production. A comprehensive liver function test provides a holistic assessment that individual markers alone cannot offer. Early detection of liver dysfunction through routine testing allows for timely intervention, which is particularly important because liver disease often progresses silently without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred.
