Hepatitis C Antibody Test
The Hepatitis C Antibody test is part of comprehensive preventive health screening. This test detects antibodies that indicate exposure to the hepatitis C virus, supporting early detection and proactive health management. A positive result does not confirm active infection and should be followed by confirmatory testing with your healthcare professional.

Reference Ranges
A negative result rules out hepatitis C in most cases, but not always: antibodies take 60 to 70 days on average (sometimes up to 26 weeks) to become detectable. If you test within 3 months of a possible exposure, a negative result tells you little — the RIVM advises an HCV-RNA test instead. A positive result does not automatically mean an active infection: antibodies remain detectable for life after cure, and must always be confirmed with an HCV-RNA test.
Reference ranges may vary between laboratories. When you order a test, a BIG-registered doctor assesses your personal results in context. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.

This test detects antibodies against the hepatitis C virus in your blood. Anti-HCV antibodies typically develop within a few weeks to months after exposure and remain present even after the infection has resolved. The test provides a qualitative result and serves as an initial screening tool.
Hepatitis C Antibody: why this value matters
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer if left untreated. Many people with hepatitis C are unaware of their infection because symptoms may not appear for years. Early detection through antibody screening enables timely referral for confirmatory testing and, if needed, effective antiviral treatment.

Hepatitis C Antibody: when is testing worthwhile?
Testing may be recommended for individuals with risk factors such as prior blood transfusions, intravenous drug use, or occupational needle-stick exposure. It is also commonly included in routine health screenings. Consult a healthcare professional for guidance on whether this test is appropriate for you.
Hepatitis C Antibody: what to do about an abnormal value
Male
Non-reactive result indicates no Hepatitis C exposure. Continue safe practices.
Reactive result requires confirmation with HCV RNA testing. Modern treatments can cure Hepatitis C - consult with a hepatologist.
Female

Hepatitis C Antibody: lifestyle and this value
Support liver health by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, maintaining a balanced diet, and staying physically active. If you are at risk for hepatitis C, avoid sharing needles or personal hygiene items. Consult a healthcare professional for advice on screening and prevention.
Hepatitis C Antibody: frequently asked questions
Does a positive anti-HCV result mean I have hepatitis C?
Not necessarily. A positive anti-HCV result means you have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus at some point. It could indicate a current infection, a past infection that has resolved, or even a false positive. A confirmatory test, such as an HCV RNA test, is needed to determine if the virus is currently active.
Can hepatitis C be cured?
Yes, modern antiviral treatments can cure hepatitis C in the majority of cases. Early detection through screening is important for accessing effective treatment. Consult a healthcare professional for evaluation and treatment options.
