Fatty liver is often very reversible in the early stages, and food and lifestyle are your most important tools. Research shows that weight loss through lifestyle can reduce fat, inflammation and even scarring (Vilar-Gomez et al., 2015). Not a miracle cure, but a proven route.

Below you will read what to eat and avoid, how much exercise helps, and why you should be cautious with "liver supplements".

What is best to eat with fatty liver?

There is no separate "liver diet", but a pattern that improves metabolism helps your liver most. Focus on:

  • Vegetables, legumes and whole grains as a base
  • Fish, nuts and olive oil as sources of healthy fats (a Mediterranean pattern)
  • Enough protein to preserve muscle while losing weight
  • Water, tea and unsweetened coffee instead of soft drinks

A low-carbohydrate or Mediterranean pattern scores well in research for fatty liver, mainly because it limits sugar and fast carbohydrates.

Which foods are best limited?

  • Sugar and fructose - soft drinks, fruit juice and sweets strain the liver most
  • Fast carbohydrates - white bread, pastries and many processed products
  • Alcohol - adds extra strain, even in the non-alcoholic form
  • Heavily processed food high in saturated fat and added sugars

Does losing weight help with fatty liver?

Yes, weight loss is the most effective step. Even 5% weight loss reduces fat, and around 7 to 10% can also improve inflammation (Vilar-Gomez et al., 2015). Gradual weight loss works better and more safely for your liver than a crash diet.

How much exercise is needed?

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, plus some strength training. Exercise improves fatty liver even before you lose weight, by improving insulin sensitivity.

Do liver supplements work?

For most "liver-detox" supplements, such as milk thistle, the evidence is weak. Some herbal extracts in high doses can actually strain the liver. Better to invest in food and exercise. Read more in our article on what to do about elevated liver values.

How long until fatty liver improves?

With a consistent approach you often see improvement in your liver values after 3 to 6 months. Want to track your progress? The Vital Check liver function test measures your liver values, with review by a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What should you not eat with fatty liver?

There is no absolute ban, but mainly limit sugar, soft drinks, alcohol and heavily processed products. These strain metabolism, and therefore your liver, most.

Is coffee good for the liver?

Unsweetened coffee is often associated in research with more favourable liver values. It is not a treatment, but fits well in a liver-supportive pattern.

Can fatty liver disappear completely with diet?

In an early stage, often yes. The sooner you start, the greater the chance of full recovery. With advanced damage, improvement is still possible but more limited.
