Detoxing your liver sounds appealing, and there is a whole market of detox teas, liver cleanses and supplements built on that wish. But the honest summary is: your liver already detoxes by itself, and for most detox products convincing evidence is lacking (Klein & Kiat, 2015). What actually improves your liver values is less exciting but proven.
Below we separate the myths from what really works.
Can you detox your liver?
Your liver is your natural detox organ. It continuously breaks down alcohol, medications and waste products, without help from a cleanse. A healthy liver needs no special cleaning. What helps your liver most is less strain: less alcohol, less sugar and a healthy weight.
Do detox cleanses and liver teas work?
For detox diets and detoxifying teas, there is little to no clinical evidence that they remove toxins or "clean" the liver (Klein & Kiat, 2015). Most studies are small and methodologically weak. If you feel better after a cleanse, it is often because you temporarily consumed less alcohol, sugar and processed food, not because of the cleanse itself.
Are liver supplements like milk thistle worthwhile?
For popular "liver supplements" such as milk thistle, the evidence is weak and inconsistent. More importantly: some herbal extracts in high doses can actually strain the liver. "Natural" does not automatically mean safe. If in doubt, discuss supplements with your doctor or pharmacist.
What does improve your liver values?
The approach that works consistently in research revolves around lifestyle (Vilar-Gomez et al., 2015):
- Losing weight if overweight - even 5 to 10% weight loss improves fatty liver.
- Less alcohol - mainly lowers an elevated gamma-GT.
- Less sugar and fast carbohydrates - important because fatty liver is tied to metabolism (Younossi et al., 2016).
- Regular exercise - improves your liver even without weight loss.

When is your liver really overloaded?
A truly overloaded liver is not visible through fatigue or a bloated feeling, but through your blood values. Want to know where you stand? The Vital Check liver function test measures your liver values objectively, with review by a doctor. That says more than any detox cleanse.
Frequently asked questions
Does lemon water detox the liver?
There is no evidence that lemon water detoxes the liver. It is fine as a healthy, sugar-free drink, but do not expect a cleansing effect.
Should I do an occasional detox cleanse?
For a healthy liver that is not necessary. Consistent lifestyle, less alcohol and a healthy weight do more than a short cleanse.
How do I know if my liver is healthy?
The most reliable way is a blood test with liver values. Symptoms are often absent, so measuring gives a clearer picture than how you feel.
