Lactate Blood Test

Resting lactate levels can indicate metabolic efficiency and tissue oxygenation. Including this marker supports a thorough metabolic health assessment.

Doctor's Assessment Included

Lactate: what this test measures

This test measures the level of lactate in your blood. Elevated levels may indicate tissue hypoxia, metabolic stress, or conditions affecting oxygen delivery or utilisation.

Lactate: why this value matters

Lactate levels help assess tissue oxygenation and metabolic function. Persistently elevated levels may indicate serious conditions requiring medical attention. In exercise contexts, lactate reflects workout intensity. Consult your healthcare provider.

Lactate: when is testing worthwhile?

Testing may be recommended in clinical settings for assessing tissue oxygenation, or in sports medicine to evaluate exercise capacity and training zones.

Lactate: symptoms of a high or low value

Low Levels

Low resting lactate is normal and indicates good metabolic function. No symptoms are associated with low resting levels.

High Levels

Elevated resting lactate may be associated with poor tissue oxygenation, sepsis, liver dysfunction, or metabolic disorders. Symptoms may include rapid breathing, nausea, and muscle weakness.

Lactate: lifestyle and this value

Regular aerobic exercise improves the body's ability to process lactate. Adequate hydration, proper nutrition, and avoiding overexertion support healthy lactate metabolism.

Lactate: frequently asked questions

Is lactate the same as lactic acid?
They are closely related. At body pH, lactic acid rapidly dissociates into lactate and hydrogen ions. In clinical and sports settings, "lactate" is the standard term.
Does lactate cause muscle soreness?
Lactate itself does not cause delayed-onset muscle soreness. Soreness is primarily caused by micro-damage to muscle fibres during exercise.
What is the lactate threshold?
The lactate threshold is the exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate faster than it can be cleared. It is a key metric in physical performance assessment.
