Does your result say basophil granulocytes? Those are white blood cells, and there are fewest of these. In adults the basophil granulocyte value sits between 0 and 0.2 x10⁹/l. That is 0 to 2 percent of your white blood cells. A low value or a zero is normal and means nothing. A rise above 0.2 is uncommon and usually calls for a repeat first. Check your own valueDoes your result say basophil granulocytes? Then this is the matching value. They are white blood cells. Of all the types, there are fewest of these. Your blood count distinguishes several different types of white blood cells.
You get two numbers with it. The percentage says what share of your white blood cells is basophil. The absolute number says how many cells per litre of blood that is.
The basophil granulocyte value in adults sits between 0 and 0.2 x10⁹/l. In percent that is 0 to 2 percent of the total white blood cell count.

This cell resembles the mast cell in your tissue. Both contain histamine and heparin. Those substances are released during an allergic reaction.
The value is counted automatically within the complete blood count. That panel also holds your red blood cells, your haemoglobin and your platelets. So you never request basophils on their own.
One thing is worth knowing. Of all cell types this is the one the machine finds hardest to count.
The honest summary is short. On its own this value says almost nothing, and that is good news.
Basophils do their work in tissue, not in your blood. The NVKC therefore writes that the count in blood says little about an allergy. A normal result does not mean you have no allergy. And a raised result does not prove one.
A rise above 0.2 x10⁹/l is uncommon. The most common causes are reactive. Think of an allergy that has been going on for a while. Chronic inflammation fits too, or an underactive thyroid. Autoimmune diseases can come with a mild rise too.
In parasitic infections it is mainly the eosinophil granulocyte count that goes up. Basophils are not the right measure for that.
There is one point that does matter. It is not one measurement that counts, but whether a rise persists. If it persists without explanation, your GP looks further. That applies especially if your total white blood cell count is raised as well.
Why the emphasis on repeating? Because the machine counts this cell poorly. UMC Utrecht reports a variation of 22 percent at 0.15 x10⁹/l. The same tube can therefore give 0.12 one time and 0.18 the next.
And a low value? That means nothing. Zero is the lower limit of normal, so below normal barely exists here.
You do not have this value drawn separately. It comes along as soon as you have a complete blood count with differential done.
The usual triggers are a periodic check or a symptom you want investigated. A result from your GP that you want to understand better is also a good reason.
See a raised value? Then have the test repeated after a few weeks. For this value that matters more than for most others. Because of the measurement variation, a one-off rise can disappear by itself.
With a low number you need to do nothing. Zero is normal and calls for no second draw.
You do not need to fast for this test. That may apply to other values in the same tube, such as glucose or cholesterol. So check the instructions for the whole package you are having done.
Report which medicines you use. Your doctor weighs that when assessing the complete blood count, not only this value.
A low basophil value causes no symptoms and is not a condition. The normal range starts at zero, so 0.0 x10⁹/l falls inside it. Basophils are so rare that the counted tube sometimes holds none at all.
That happens often and it says nothing about your immunity. No illness is recognised on a routine result by too few basophils. So there is nothing you need to do and nothing to repeat.
You do not feel a raised basophil value. Any symptoms you have belong to the cause underneath. With an allergy you may have itching, sneezing or a skin rash. With an underactive thyroid, tiredness, feeling cold and weight gain fit.
With chronic inflammation it depends entirely on the condition. On one measurement a mild rise usually means nothing, because the measurement itself is imprecise. If the rise stays without explanation, take it to your GP. Bring your whole blood count.
No diet, supplement or habit changes your basophil value in a targeted way. That sounds disappointing, but with this cell it is simply the case.
What you can do concerns the cause of a rise. If you have a known allergy, limit the triggers that bother you. Enough sleep and rest help keep your immune defence balanced.
If you have felt tired and cold for a while, have your thyroid checked. That is one of the reactive causes you can genuinely have treated. Do not start on that yourself with iodine or other supplements.
Do not buy products promising to improve your white blood cells. For this value no such thing exists, and there is nothing here to improve.
The most useful step is simple: keep your results. Put the basophil granulocyte count next to your eosinophils and your total white blood cell count. This value fluctuates a lot. The line across three measurements therefore says more than one isolated result.
Basophils are white blood cells. Of the five types in your differential, these are the least common. They contain histamine and heparin and take part in allergic reactions and inflammation. There are few in your blood, because they do their work mainly in tissue. On your result they appear as a percentage and as an absolute count.
In adults the basophil granulocyte value is 0 to 0.2 x10⁹/l. That is the same as 0 to 2 percent of your white blood cells. Or 0 to 200 cells per microlitre. This range comes from the NVKC. Dutch labs use upper limits from 0.10 to 0.20. So always check the range on your own result.
That is the same cell, just with the full name. Granulocyte means the cell contains granules, in this case holding histamine and heparin. Laboratories often use the long name. In plain language and on this page we call them basophils. Both terms refer to exactly the same number.
Almost never. A low or zero value is normal and calls for nothing. A slightly raised value on one measurement is often down to the imprecision of the count. Only a rise that persists without explanation is a reason to have your GP look. Especially alongside other abnormal values.
Not directly. No food or supplement demonstrably changes this number. What you can do is address the cause. Limit allergic triggers, sleep enough, and have your thyroid checked with persistent tiredness. Products promising to raise your white blood cells do not do so.
Every time you have a complete blood count with differential done. That is the case with most general blood tests. Measuring it separately serves no purpose. If you see a rise, one repeat after a few weeks is enough. That shows whether it persists.
