Check your own valueYour CRP value is the amount of C-reactive protein in your blood. Your liver makes this protein. It does so as soon as inflammation starts.
Once that starts, the amount of CRP rises sharply within 6 to 8 hours. Then it falls just as fast. How much CRP is in the blood tells you about scale. Not about where.
CRP is a protein your liver makes when there is inflammation somewhere in your body. Hence the nickname inflammation value.
It helps to know what the test does and does not do. It tells you that something is going on. It does not tell you where it sits or what it is. An infected tooth, a bladder infection and a large bruise can all three produce the same number.
Your result is in mg/L. Up to 10 mg/L counts as normal on the routine assay.
In full it is C-reactive protein, shortened to CRP. A CRP test measures that one protein and nothing else. With acute inflammation you see the rise within 6 to 8 hours. Bacterial infections give the highest values; viral ones often stay lower.
The most common question about this value is always the same. My CRP is 12 after a cold, should I worry?
Usually not, and that comes down to how fast this protein moves. Your CRP starts rising 6 to 8 hours after the trigger. It then roughly doubles every 8 hours.
It peaks after two days. After that it halves each day as long as the cause is gone.
So a value of 12 a few days after a cold is not strange. It is exactly what you would expect from a body still clearing up. It says nothing about anything chronic.
The only way to be sure is to re-test once you have genuinely recovered. Two weeks after your symptoms have gone is a good rule of thumb. If the value is normal then, you were right.
If it is still high, that is a question for your GP. And now it is a useful one.
When you get tested decides what your result is worth. Test too early and you measure the aftermath of something already over.
The rule of thumb is simple: test when you feel well and rested. At least two weeks after a cold or flu has completely gone. And a few days after a hard training session.
These are the things that lift your value temporarily without anything being wrong.

If you want to know whether an infection is clearing, testing twice with a day in between is more useful than one isolated result. Then you see the direction.
A CRP test looks for inflammation. Or rules it out. Acute inflammation usually gives a high number. Pneumonia is the common example.
An autoimmune disease keeps it mildly raised for longer. There are two CRP tests. The routine one is what you get here. To see whether something is settling, draw twice.
If your CRP is raised, it tells you that something is going on. The normal range your lab uses is printed on your result. Not every lab uses the same upper limit.
A low value is good news and never needs treating. There is no lower limit you can fall below.
What you do sometimes see is a result reported as less than 5. That is not the same as a very precise low measurement. The routine test simply cannot see below about 5 mg/L. That is the floor of the test.

And remember: a normal value does not rule out an infection. In the first hours your CRP has not risen yet.
You do not feel a high inflammation value itself. What you feel comes from the cause. Fever, pain, a swollen spot, tiredness, or sometimes nothing at all.
With an unexpectedly high result, work through the ordinary list first. Were you ill in the past few weeks? Do you have a nagging tooth or bleeding gums?
Have you had a vaccination recently? Did you do a hard session or a race? Have you had a heavy fall?
One of those five explains a great many of the raised results that give people a fright.
If your value stays high while you feel fine and none of those apply, see your GP. Not because the number says what you have, because it does not. But because it raises the question of what to look at. Take your result with you.

You cannot bring a CRP number down directly, and you do not need to. It is a gauge showing what sits underneath. Remove the cause and the gauge falls by itself.
Three things demonstrably work. Stopping smoking. Losing abdominal fat, because fat tissue continuously makes the substance that prompts your liver to produce CRP. And regular moderate exercise, which lowers your value in the long run.
Watch that last one, because it looks contradictory. One hard session lifts your CRP temporarily. Exercising regularly lowers it over months. Those two get confused a lot.
Sleep counts for more than most people think. Short or restless sleep measurably lifts the value.
On food: patterns rich in vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts and oily fish are associated with lower values. Do not start supplements on the basis of a blood result; discuss that with your GP.
