Vitamins

Vitamin D (25-OH)

Your vitamin D level tells you how much vitamin D your body has in store, and that number depends heavily on the month your blood was drawn. September is your yearly high, late March your yearly low, with nothing about your health having changed in between. From October to March the sun sits too low over the Netherlands for skin production, so you live off what you built up in summer. One result on its own therefore says less than you would think, and two results say something only if you know both months.

Learn more
Cardiovascular

Total Cholesterol

Total cholesterol is the foundational lipid screening marker. Regular testing provides the first line of cardiovascular risk detection.

Learn more
Metabolic

HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)

HbA1c is the gold standard for assessing diabetes risk and long-term metabolic health. Regular monitoring is essential for proactive prevention.

Learn more
Thyroid

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

Your TSH value says how hard your pituitary is pulling on your thyroid, and that is something different from how much thyroid hormone you have. TSH is the signal your pituitary, a pea-sized gland at the base of your brain, sends to your thyroid to say how much hormone to make. At the laboratory that runs the test the usual range sits between 0.27 and 4.20 mE/L. If your number is above it, your thyroid is probably running slow; below it, and it is probably running fast. That feels back to front, and it is, because TSH is the signal and not the hormone itself. One result is not a diagnosis, so always check the reference value on your own report and let your GP repeat the measurement if it falls just outside the line.

Minerals

Ferritin

Your ferritin value tells you how large your iron store is, because ferritin is a protein that stores iron. Think of it as the store cupboard, and what is on the table right now is serum iron. That store empties before you become anaemic, so you can already feel tired while your blood count still looks fine. There is one thing you need to know to make sense of your result: ferritin also rises when you have an inflammation or infection. That is why a CRP always goes alongside it, because without that second value you cannot tell whether a normal figure is genuinely normal.

Learn more
Inflammation

hs-CRP (High Sensitivity CRP)

hs-CRP is one of the most valuable markers for preventive cardiovascular screening. It detects the subtle inflammation that may precede heart disease by years.

Learn more
Minerals

Iron (Serum)

Serum iron testing provides insight into your current iron availability. Combined with ferritin and TIBC, it supports comprehensive iron status assessment and early intervention.

Vitamins

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is considered a key nutrient for red blood cell formation, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. Adequate levels may support your overall energy and cognitive health. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised interpretation.

Learn more
Vitamins

Folate (Folic Acid)

Folate measures vitamin B9 levels, a water-soluble nutrient involved in cell division and DNA synthesis. Monitoring your folate status may help you maintain awareness of this important aspect of your nutritional health.

Learn more
Liver

ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase)

Your ALT value tells you whether your liver cells are being damaged. ALT is a protein that liver cells use to process what you eat and drink; healthy cells keep it inside. When cells break down, it leaks into your blood, and the lab counts how much. For men anything up to 45 U/L is normal, for women anything up to 34 U/L, so a 14, 16 or 22 on your report is simply a healthy liver. If you sit a little above that, at 52 for example, it is usually not liver disease but one of the five ordinary causes below.

In Amsterdam you can have your blood drawn at Locatie Mauvestraat on Mauvestraat 67, a walk-in collection point with no appointment needed (maandag, dinsdag, donderdag 8.00-11.00 uur). Independent laboratories also run sites further across the city, from GHC Venserpolder in the south-east to GC Holendrecht and De Boomsspijker nearer the centre, so wherever your day in Amsterdam takes you there is usually a point within reach.

This works whether or not you live in the Netherlands: no GP referral, no Dutch health insurance, and nothing to arrange beyond ordering online. You pay by card, and a barcode reaches your inbox by email, usually within one working day. Bring that barcode to your chosen Amsterdam site together with a valid form of ID, a photo on your phone is enough, and nothing needs to be printed.

Choosing where to go works the same way for every order: once you have paid, a map of Amsterdam's collection points opens at checkout, each one marked with its hours and whether it takes walk-ins, so the choice is based on what suits your day rather than a bare list of addresses.

Preparation is not the same for every panel. A handful of tests ask you to fast beforehand, and a couple care about the time of day rather than any time that suits you; the product page for each test spells this out before you order, so there is nothing to guess once you are at the counter in Amsterdam.

Your results are not read out over the phone or posted to you. They land in your own account online once the laboratory has finished, and a BIG-registered doctor reviews every result before it does.

Vital covers the blood work a routine GP visit often does not: cholesterol, thyroid function, vitamin levels, iron and the wider markers people check when they are simply tired or curious about their own health. A walk-in site in Amsterdam, alongside the appointment-based ones nearby, means ordering one of those panels takes no referral and no time in a waiting room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get my blood drawn in Amsterdam?

You can get your blood drawn at 19 certified locations in Amsterdam. 2 locations offer walk-in hours. See the addresses and opening hours per location above. The next opening under the standard hours is at Medisch Centrum Gelderlandplein (opens tomorrow 07:00).

Do I need a referral for a blood test in Amsterdam?

No, with Vitalcheck you don't need a referral from your doctor. You can order a blood test online and choose a location in Amsterdam.

Is walk-in service available in Amsterdam?

Yes, that is possible in Amsterdam. A site with walk-in hours is labelled as such above; during those hours you can come in without an appointment. Just order your blood test online first.

Do all draw sites in Amsterdam work by appointment?

No, not all of them. If the site you pick in Amsterdam offers walk-in hours, no booking is needed. If it does not, you arrange an appointment after ordering online.

Do I need to fast before my blood test?

It depends on the test. Each test says whether fasting is needed, and after ordering the instructions for your tests are in your confirmation email and on your order page. Drinking water is always allowed.

What do I need to bring to the blood draw location in Amsterdam?

Two things: the barcode we email you and a valid form of ID. You can show the barcode on your phone, so printing is not necessary. Without a BSN the email has no barcode, and you print the referral form through the link in that email. Nothing else is needed. The barcode tells the location in Amsterdam which tests were ordered.

How far in advance should I plan my visit in Amsterdam?

Allow one working day between your order and your visit in Amsterdam. The email with your referral arrives within one working day, and you cannot be seen without it. Orders placed outside office hours count from the next working day. The blood draw itself takes about fifteen minutes.

What are the opening hours of the blood draw locations in Amsterdam?

Opening hours vary per location. Most locations in Amsterdam are open on weekday mornings; some also in the afternoon or on Saturdays. Check the current opening hours per location above.

Which laboratory draws your blood in Amsterdam?

In Amsterdam your blood is drawn at a site operated by Atalmedial and Labplusarts. Every site belongs to a certified laboratory, and each location above names which laboratory that is.

What does a blood test cost in Amsterdam?
